Mphosong, Lesotho (July 8, 2012)
The Photographer's Description of the Snowfall:
Lesotho is the country with the highest minimum height, with no point less than 1000 m above sea level. The Maluti Mountains along its eastern side reach over 3400 m in altitude, and receive regular snowfalls in winter. Being about 4 hours' drive from the metropolis of Johannesburg in South Africa, the snow attracts a small crowd of skiers and ice climbers who would otherwise have to fly overseas to practice their sport.
These huts are alongside the Lepoqua river in the Bokong Nature Reserve in northern Lesotho, at an altitude of about 3000 m. The reserve looks down on the Katse Dam in a valley below. On the evening of 7 July 2012 we had some light rain, followed by about 6 inches of snow overnight. We awoke to find the normally hot dry African plains completely covered in snow.
